Regardless of who you are or how much experience you have under your belt, change is scary. It’s the fear of the unknown.

But don’t let fear hold your association back. If you need a little push, check out these tips for fully embracing change:

1. Take baby steps

Change doesn’t have to be huge to be considered worthwhile. If fear is the one thing holding your association back, start by taking baby steps. Ease into whatever it is you’re trying to accomplish. For example, let’s say you want your association to be more digital; more modern. Well don’t think you have to get a mobile app, an event, app, or a YouTube channel all at once. Start small. Is your association using Facebook? Twitter? Is your website responsive?

These are little steps you can take that, over time, will help you achieve your goal.

2. Ask for feedback

The great thing about change is you don’t have to do it alone. And in fact, in most cases, you shouldn’t. Ask for the feedback of others. This includes your coworkers, your board, your members, etc.

And don’t think you have to wait until something is done to ask for feedback. Ask along the way – before, during, and after a decision is made. That way, you can revise as you go.

Which brings us to point #3…

3. Revise and persist

Let’s take a step back for a second. Why is change so scary? Because you could fail. (That’s why I’m scared of change, at least.)

But here’s the thing – failure really isn’t so bad. It’s an opportunity to learn. In fact, there’s a great Henry Ford quote that says, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” Change might mean taking two steps back in order to take one step forward, but isn’t that better than taking no steps at all?

Remember association pros, revise and persist!

Embracing change as a leader is only one part of the association management process. In addition to that, there’s making sure you’re recruiting enough members, engaging your existing members, raising enough funds to run your association, and so on.
