In June, we announced a contest called “What’s Your Why?” to talk about your “why” – or, your passion. The reason you stay late, volunteer, and go the extra mile for your organization. In other words, what makes you and your colleagues tick?

Over the course of the month we received nearly 30 submissions from association and chamber professionals from across the country. Thank you for all of your amazing submissions, it was truly a tough decision to choose a winner!

Every single Clicker (MemberClicks employee) was given the opportunity to vote and, after some deliberation, we’re pleased to announce that we have selected a submission to receive a FREE registration (plus flight and hotel expenses) to MC LIVE!, a three-day conference for association and chamber professionals.

Elizabeth Smith Miller with the National Safe Place Network! Her winning submission:

Just thinking about my “why” brings me to tears! My “why” is clear – my “why” is the kids. Every year, more than 12,000 kids access safety from a potentially life-threatening event because of our programs. Children who experience abuse, neglect, homelessness, bullying, at risk of being human trafficked – or are currently being trafficked (and more) are able to enter a Safe Place® location and receive immediate help and safety. If they are unable to get to a Safe Place, they can use TXT 4 HELP – our texting initiative that connects young people to a mental health professional and resources 24/7 – free of charge. Any child at any time can benefit from our programs. Our programs wouldn’t exist without the ability to operate them. MemberClicks plays a significant role in our operations. Every person has different talents and skills; however, every person has some skillset they can use to help make safety possible for youth. My skillset happens to be in business and marketing. I don’t have the face of a hero, but my behind-the-scenes efforts to keep kids safe makes a difference. It truly takes a village. I’m part of that village and helping to creating a world where all youth are safe is my “why”.

Congratulations Elizabeth – and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for sharing your “why” with us! MemberClicks is proud to have you as a customer and to play a role in such important work.

We would also like to take a moment to recognize the runners-up!

Dana Weaver with LeadingAge Kansas:

I serve our members because I was one at one point. Our members serve seniors in Kansas through housing and other long-term services and supports. When I was a little girl, my great grandmother was in a horrible nursing home in Arkansas. It was before regulations and it was a sad place to be. I loved the people that lived there. They lit up when I came around and I knew I wanted to help them somehow. One day my father took me to see my GG and things were more depressing than normal. I asked my dad why that was so. His response was “I don’t know honey, but if you want to you can change all of this when you grow up.” I became a nursing home administrator at 24 and invested my efforts in changing the culture. For the last 16 years, I have served at the association to help make policy changes on a more global level. My “why” was my GG and now it is for my dad and eventually myself. I want to be the change I wish to see in our field.

Katie Berry with SBI Association Management:

My why: never underestimate the power of people. It is awe-inspiring to see what associations are able to accomplish in short periods of time, and it happens from the work of people from incredibly diverse backgrounds and experiences coming together around a common goal and purpose. People volunteer their time and energy to build something greater than the sum of their individual parts. Those in the association community leave the world a better place than they found it. It is a reminder that when we come together, we can, and do, accomplish amazing things.

David Crenshaw with the Industry Council for Tangible Assets:
David submitted his “why” via Facebook video! You can check it out here.

Servant leadership is my “why.” My greatest successes are in helping other to succeed. Simply put: I’m here to serve. What’s YOUR why?

Thank you again to all 30 of our amazing submissions! We’re so grateful for the work that you do, and it was a privilege to learn more about the driving forces behind your organizations!

While we could only pick one winner, we hope that you’re all encouraged to attend MC LIVE! for more training, speakers, and celebration to inspire your “why.” Click here for more information and to register:
